Renting a Popcorn, Cotton Candy or Snow Cone Machine: What You Need to Know

Updated · Reading time approx. 4 min

The smell of fresh popcorn, a cloud of cotton candy or a rainbow snow cone – concession machines turn any birthday, school carnival, church festival or company picnic into a real fair. They are easy to rent and fairly easy to run, but there are a few things to plan: power, supplies, a good spot and cleanup. Here’s what to know before you send your inquiry.

The three classics at a glance

  • Popcorn machine: a kettle on a tabletop unit or a cart. Often rented with kits containing pre-measured kernels, oil and salt, plus bags or boxes
  • Cotton candy machine: spins flavored floss sugar into cotton candy. Needs cones or sticks and a bubble or shield to catch the floss
  • Snow cone machine: shaves ice that you top with flavored syrups. Needs plenty of ice, syrups, cups and spoons or straws

Ballpark prices

As a rough guide, a single popcorn, cotton candy or snow cone machine often rents for somewhere around $50–$125 per day. Supplies are usually extra and priced per serving pack or kit, and delivery may be added on top. Prices vary by region, season and machine size – many companies offer a better rate when you rent the machine together with a bounce house or several concession machines.

Power: plan your outlets

Concession machines plug into regular household outlets, but several of them draw a lot of power – especially cotton candy machines and the heating kettle of a popcorn machine. Ask the rental company what each machine needs.

  • Plan one circuit per machine where possible
  • Don’t run a concession machine on the same circuit as a bounce house blower
  • Outdoors, use GFCI-protected outlets and keep cords and connections dry
  • Use only the extension cords the company approves – thin household cords can overheat
  • If there is no power at your location, ask about a generator

Supplies: how much to order

Supplies run out faster than you’d think when the line gets long. Tell the rental company how many guests you expect and how long the machine will run, and ask what they recommend. It’s usually better to have one extra pack than to close the stand early.

  • Popcorn: kits (kernels, oil, salt) and serving bags or boxes
  • Cotton candy: floss sugar in one or more flavors and cones or sticks
  • Snow cones: ice, syrups in a few flavors, cups and spoons or straws
  • Napkins, a trash can and a small table for serving

Snow cones need a lot of ice

Ask the rental company which ice works with their machine – some shave block ice, many work with regular cubed ice from the store. Plan where you’ll buy it, keep it in coolers in the shade and have more than you think you need on hot days.

Indoors or outdoors?

All three machines work indoors and outdoors, but each has its quirks.

  • Popcorn: produces heat and a strong smell; indoors, keep it away from smoke detectors and give it airflow
  • Cotton candy: wind and humidity make the floss hard to spin – set up out of the wind, ideally under a tent or canopy
  • Snow cones: sticky syrups attract bees and wasps outdoors; keep lids on bottles and wipe spills right away
  • Outdoors, always set up on a sturdy, level table in the shade and protect the machines from rain

Safety while operating

Follow the operating instructions you receive with the machine. Popcorn kettles and cotton candy heads get hot, and cotton candy machines spin fast. An adult should run the machines – kids can help serve, but they shouldn’t operate them or reach in while they’re running.

If you plan to sell food at a public event or fundraiser, your local health department may have rules or require a permit. Check with them, or ask the event organizer.

Cleaning and return

Ask before your event how the company wants the machine returned. Some include cleaning in the price; others expect a basic wipe-down and charge a cleaning fee if the machine comes back with burned oil, sugar build-up or sticky syrup.

  • Let the popcorn kettle cool completely before wiping it
  • Empty leftover sugar from the cotton candy machine as instructed
  • Drain melted ice from the snow cone machine and wipe off syrup
  • Never submerge electrical parts in water

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to rent a popcorn machine?

As a rough guide, a popcorn machine often rents for somewhere around $50–$125 per day, with supplies and delivery usually extra. Prices vary by region and season – the rental company will quote the exact total.

Are supplies included with a concession machine rental?

Sometimes a starter pack is included, but often supplies are sold separately per kit or serving pack. Ask what is included and how many servings you get.

Can I run a cotton candy machine outdoors?

Yes, but wind and humidity make it harder to spin floss. Set it up out of the wind, ideally under a canopy, and keep it dry.

Can I plug a popcorn machine and a bounce house into the same outlet?

It’s better not to. Both can draw a lot of power. Ask the rental company how many separate circuits you need.
